Materials that improve with age

At FORMA we return to this idea on every project: that the quality of a space is decided not by its grandest gesture but by the accumulation of small, considered decisions — the ones a visitor never consciously notices, but always feels.

Good design is rarely about adding more. More often it is about removing what is unnecessary until only the essential remains, and then giving that essential thing the care it deserves. Restraint, in our practice, is not the absence of decoration — it is the presence of intention.

We work slowly, in close dialogue, on a small number of projects at a time. This is the only way we know to hold the whole in mind while resolving the detail — to keep the last object placed on the shelf in conversation with the first line drawn on the plan.

The best spaces feel inevitable — as though they could not have been any other way.

Materials matter here more than anywhere. We choose those that improve with age and touch: stone that warms, timber that deepens, plaster and metal that carry the mark of the hand. A home should not be finished on the day you move in; it should begin.

This is what we mean by considered space — quiet, warm, and built to be lived in for decades.
